Your photographs looked amazing when you took them… so why do they look dull when you get them onto your computer?

If your photos look flat, grey or lifeless, don't immediately reach for the Saturation slider. There could be several reasons your colours aren't looking the way you expected.

Modern cameras can autofocus, calculate exposure, recognise subjects, reduce noise and produce incredibly polished images with almost no technical knowledge required. And smartphones have taken this even further, using computational photography and AI to combine frames, improve dynamic range, remove distractions and create images that would have required considerably more skill just a few years ago. But is that actually a good thing?

Jared Polin recently discussed the controversial subject of back-button autofocus on Instagram, arguing that modern autofocus has become so good that many photographers simply don't need it anymore. And I agree… …but only up to a point.
