Fro Is WRONG! Back Button Focus Isn't Dead!

Jared Polin recently discussed the controversial subject of back-button autofocus on Instagram, arguing that modern autofocus has become so good that many photographers simply don't need it anymore. And I agree… …but only up to a point.

Modern autofocus is incredible. Subject detection, eye AF and tracking have completely changed the way many of us photograph sports, wildlife, portraits and other moving subjects. But does that mean back-button focus is obsolete? I don't think so.

In this video, I look at why back-button focus can still be useful for landscape photography, product photography, still life and other situations where you want to control exactly when the camera focuses. And ultimately, I think the answer isn't about which method is “correct”. It's about which method gives you the most control.

So what do you think? Do you still use back-button focus? Let me know in the comments — and tell me what type of photography you shoot. And if you enjoy the video, please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and SHARE it with another photographer who has an opinion on back-button focus!
