We’re going on a journey back in time with the latest release from DxO - Film Pack 8.

We’re going on a journey back in time with the latest release from DxO - Film Pack 8. Stick around to find out what’s new.

Welcome to Coffee Break Photography, your regular dose of inspiration and know-how for photographers. I’m Rich Dyson from Edinburgh Photography Workshop, and today, we’re taking a leisurely stroll down memory lane with DxO’s brand new release – FilmPack 8.

Now, if you’re someone who enjoys the timeless look of classic film photography, but prefer the convenience of digital, you’re in for a treat. FilmPack 8 lets you give your digital shots that authentic film vibe. It’s perfect for wedding photographers, or anyone wanting to add a classic touch to their work.

So, what’s changed with this latest release? Let’s dive in.

When you open up FilmPack 8, you’ll notice the standard interface – just choose the photo you want to edit, and you’re greeted with a collection of renderings to apply. With this update, DxO has added 15 new presets. Nine offer colour negative film simulations, and six are dedicated to black and white. If you’re after something with a vintage, desaturated feel, check out the Ilford Ilfocolour 400 preset – it gives a great desaturated feel.

FilmPack 8 isn’t just about standalone edits. Most of us use Photoshop for our main workflow, and now there’s a new palette view that makes life even simpler. After installing FilmPack 8, you’ll find it under the Plugins menu. Once open, you get a preview of how each treatment will look; select your choice, and voilà – a new layer with that film effect is created in seconds.

If you’re a DxO PhotoLab 9 user, it’s even slicker. Just pick your photo in PhotoLibrary, hit ‘Customise’, then ‘Presets’, and you’ll see all the FilmPack profiles as genuine previews of your image. It’s a seamless experience for those deep in the DxO ecosystem.

If you appreciate tools that make editing faster and more intuitive, hit that thumbs-up button below – it really helps the channel reach more people who love photography!

One of the joys of FilmPack is exploring those film types from decades past. Previous versions had a clever feature that educated you on how famous photographers shot their work, then suggested matching presets. In this update, DxO has added 19 new historical images and renderings, giving you even more inspiration and choices for stylising your edits.

Have you ever tried to recreate a vintage look from a specific era? Share your stories in the comments – I’d love to hear what styles you’re drawn to.

Now, let’s talk about the headline act: TimeWarp. There are two new ways to play with time and see its effect on your images. First up is Time Travel. Imagine a timeline stretching from the 19th century to the present – you can scroll through and preview how your image would appear in different decades. Fancy an ‘80s vibe? Just pick the era and apply that iconic film render.

The second option, Ageify, lets you look ahead. It’s based on authentic film stocks and effects, showing how your photo might age over the years. It’s fascinating to see your shots evolve with time, all within the digital space.

Which era would you most like to recreate in your photography? Drop your answer in the comments and let’s get a discussion going!

If you’ve still got a film camera, or perhaps some old negatives tucked away, FilmPack 8 introduces the Scanned Film Optimisation Tool. With one click, you can invert tonal values on colour or black and white negatives and then fine-tune with more than 10 dedicated tone curve presets. Sadly, I’m not in this group, but if you are, this is going to massively speed up your editing process.

For those working with high-resolution RAW files, FilmPack 8 brings enhancements to frames, textures, and light leaks. These effects add a beautifully aged look without sacrificing image quality.

If you’re finding these creative effects useful, don’t forget to share this video with your fellow photographers. It helps me bring more content like this to you!

DxO FilmPack 8 is released today, 30 September 2025 with a number of different pricing models. As with all DxO products, when you buy the product, you pay up front and don’t get lumped with monthly subscriptions. This does mean that when new functionality is released you need to buy the next version. As usual there is a separate price for users who are upgrading from version 6 or 7.

You’ve seen how well it integrates into PhotoLab 9, so if you are new to both FilmPack and PhotoLab then there is a great bundle offer, saving you about 20% on the individual costs.

There’s also a third bundle which adds on DxO’s Viewpoint software. I’ll add affiliate links below the video. Remember, you won’t pay anything additional by using these links, but I will get a few pounds to help run Coffee Break Photography. Thank you!

So, is FilmPack 8 something you’d use in your own editing process? Tell me in the comments what field of photography you’re in, and how you might use these new features.
